The Setup

This week we’re joined by Mirko Zizka, a French Canadian hockey buddy of Kerry’s who’s been making an annual pilgrimage to Myrtle Beach with his crew for over 15 years. With 80-100 courses in the vicinity, Myrtle Beach is the second-largest concentration of golf courses in the US — and Mirko’s group has figured out how to maximize it without breaking the bank.

The Format

Eight guys, seven nights, seven rounds. They use a local agency to handle tee times and accommodations, book three months out, and rotate between a core group of five to six regulars with a few new faces each year. The group plays a two-man scramble format to keep things moving and competitive, with a modest weekly prize pool to keep everybody engaged.

The Hot Takes

  • 80-100 courses — the sheer volume means you can do Myrtle Beach ten different ways and never repeat a course
  • Budget-friendly — off-season October trips run ~$150/round for quality courses, with accommodations that are “really cheap”
  • Agency booking — Mirko’s group uses a local outfit to handle all tee times and lodging, which takes the headache out of coordinating eight guys
  • Two-man scramble — keeps pace of play up and gives higher-handicap guys a chance to contribute
  • All eight guys in one penthouse — six bedrooms, kitchen, nice view, and the camaraderie that comes with it
  • World Tour course — played a course with replica famous holes (Amen Corner, TPC Sawgrass 17)
  • Rotation destination — Myrtle Beach sits in a rotation with Scottsdale, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic

The Run-It-Back

Mirko wouldn’t change much except maybe tightening up the tournament format to keep everybody engaged all week. Seven days is a long trip — by day six, the golf legs are feeling it. His advice: use an agency, book early, play your scramble, and enjoy the fact that Myrtle Beach delivers serious value without the sticker shock of a bucket-list destination.
